Just West of the Loop and River North, the Fulton River District is a neighborhood known for the chocolate aromas emanating from the Blommer Chocolate Company located on West Kinzie Street. The district is located in the Near West Side, east of the Chicago River, north of Lake Street, and south of Ohio Street. A major industrial hub for lumber and grain in the 1940’s, FRD is now known for commerce and transportation.
Now a residential neighborhood, the district is in a convenient location next to Ogilvie Transportation Center (commuter terminal for Metra) as well as the Kennedy Expressway, making it a central transportation hub for commuters and local residents. Ogilvie Transportation Center is also home to the local French Market, where Chicagoans can purchase fresh produce, try pastries at the various European bakery kiosks, and have a cup of Italian roast at the LavAzza café located inside.
FRD is mostly made up of industrial warehouses that have been converted to loft condos and new construction high rises with condominiums and apartments available for new homeowners. As of 2008, FRD has also acquired the Fulton River Park, which offers local families a dog park, a landscaped lawn, and a playground. Some of Chicago’s best restaurants are located in the vicinity as well. Carnivale, on W. Fulton Market Street, offers the chance to dance salsa, eat Latin flavored creations, and enjoy cocktails in one colorful and large factory building space. La Scarola and Piccolo Sogno are two Italian restaurants that have been attracting Chicagoans from all over the city. La Scarola, a small family owned restaurant on W. Grand, features an intimate environment and a fresh and authentic Italian dining experience, while Piccolo Sogno on N. Halsted has been topping the charts on Chicago’s best restaurant lists since its opening in 2008. This “little dream” (piccolo sogno in Italian) is known for its rustic Italian cuisine and an ‘all-Italian’ wine program, as well as an outdoor seating area.
